It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Vivien Nessie Hay (nee Paterson) on January 24th, with family by her side, at the age of 91. Vivien was born on May 11, 1918 in Folkestone, England to Douglas and Isabella Paterson.  She will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her children Colin Hay (Elizabeth) and Linda King (John), her granddaughter Jennifer Ross. Vivien was predeceased by her husband, James L. G. Hay in 1987, parents Douglas and Isabella Paterson and grandson, Michael Ross.

In 1919, Vivien’s family immigrated to Winnipeg, settling in the Wolseley / West Broadway area where Vivien grew up and was educated. Her grandmother, Annie Gilmore (Gran), provided a special influence in her life and a special place in her heart. Vivien enjoyed the arts and had a flair for drawing and painting, which lead to a new career in later life.  She enjoyed horseback riding, golfing and had a love of dogs. Vivien was a member of the Easter Star and Beta Sigma Phi. In 1947, Vivien married James L. G. Hay and enjoyed 41 years together until Jimmy's death in 1987. During these years, they raised two children, son Colin and daughter Linda in their family home on Corydon Avenue. In the early 1960's, Vivien embarked on a new career as a publication "stringer" utilizing her design and writing talents for many major publications. She was an accomplished writer and was sought by the Province of Manitoba where she accepted an offer for a position as Information Services Writer. In 1973, Vivien left the government opening her own business, Hay & Associates Public Relations. Hay & Associates was extremely successful and she hosted dignitaries and royalty from around the world, planned events for many major corporations and helped promote many shows and festivals world-wide. Throughout the years Vivien and Jimmy enjoyed traveling to winter warm-spots to meet friends and old acquaintances. They were very active together during Jimmy's years in The Grand Lodge of Manitoba, particularly when Jimmy was the Grand Master of Manitoba. Vivien was the most gracious hostess and enjoyed having family and friends visit throughout her life. After Jimmy's death, Vivien moved to an apartment on Wellington Crescent. In the later years, when mobility became an issue, she moved to Oakview Place where she developed many new friendships. A Memorial Service and celebration of Vivien's life will be held Friday January 29, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at the Mosaic Funeral Chapel, 1839 Inkster Blvd. Please join the family for fellowship and celebration of Vivien after the service in the reception area of Mosaic Funeral Chapel.  A private family interment service will take place Friday at Brookside Cemetery, prior to the Memorial Service. For family and friends not able to attend in person, Vivien’s memorial service will be broadcast live over the internet on private password protected webpages. Contact Mosaic for further information. Special thanks to the doctors and nursing staff at the Grace Hospital Emergency, the Intensive Care Unit, the Surgical Unit and all the staff on the 4th Floor Surgical Ward for their compassion and tender loving care shown to Vivien and family.
